Red

Red is a notoriously tricky color. You never want to be "in the red" when it comes to financial matters.
Red pens are never used for writing, only correcting your mistakes. If you dye your hair red it will fade away faster than any other color. Stop signs and other warnings come in red, making sure you stay alert and keep your distance. And if you want to get a tattoo with red ink, you had better do your research. It is the most likely color to cause an allergic reaction once it is under your skin. It creates painful scabs and takes much longer to heal than any other color. And blood, which runs blue in your body turns red when it hits the oxygen in the air. And that is when you know something has gone wrong.

And yet no one can deny its magnetic power. Red grabs your attention like nothing else.

All the other girls at my job wear makeup around their eyes. Between all my fumbling with glasses and contacts I always felt like my eyes were a difficult spot to emphasize. I love my bright green eyes but I'd rather make sure I can see clearly out of them instead of covering them with itchy eye shadow.

That was when I decided to wear lipstick. But not just any color. I wanted to wear red.

Originally, most of my friends thought it was an odd choice. I rarely wear anything even as simple as foundation. My nonchalant attitude towards makeup is most often summed up as an odd combination of laziness and confidence. I am too lazy to spend much time on it but I am also lucky enough to feel confident without it. I just never felt like I had to "put on a face" in any sense.

Besides, I love the way the sun and breeze feel against my skin. Makeup makes most girls feel pretty but I just want to feel. Nothing is more beautiful than that.

But red lipstick is different. I never felt like it made me more beautiful. It was more like it was harnessing a power that was already there. I've got a strong voice and I love to talk. It just seemed natural to emphasize my mouth. That deep red slides across my lips and I press them together as I look into the mirror. This was the way it was meant to be.

When I go swing dancing I get all dressed up but never wear any makeup except the red lipstick. I like to dance fast, feel the pace of the music, and just let my body work. By the end of the night I am breathing heavy and sweating, reminding me that my body is a beautiful machine. If I had worn makeup it would be gone by now anyway. But the red remains.

I like the way red lipstick reminds me of pin up girls. That voluptuous kind of sexy that held it's own as a woman and knew that was more than enough. The kind of sexy that is synonymous with curves and attitude. The kind of sexy that retains a strong mind and power of will. Confidence has a color and that color is red.

One day at work a group of rowdy young men came in. One asked me for a cup of coffee and smirked at me as he said "I like your lipstick, it's very sassy."
I turned around and smirked right back at him. "It's not lipstick, it is the blood of my enemies."

Red is a color you don't mess with unless you know how to handle it. I'm tougher than most, but most like to learn that the hard way.

I move fast, always busy and burning with determination. I have to change and create. A primal force of nature that gives as much as it consumes. This fire runs hot but I have always been comfortable being in the red.

Wearing The Work

In working with DRIP I find myself always covered in paint. Although a few people are afraid of getting messy I find it leaves beautiful marks.

I took this photo of myself after a show were I got pelted with paint. The pale blue river ran all the way from my neck to the middle of my torso, melting away the DRIP logo I had stamped myself with along the way.

Then I noticed my hand, splashed with blue and flecks of red. Dappled like some kind of surrealist Appaloosa. It soaked into the rims of my fingernails and collected in the ridges of the ring I had gotten from the antique shop.

I have never been concerned with my hands being smooth or perfect. After all these years of making art I've grown more accustomed to seeing them covered in material or scrapped up. That suits me just fine. I'd rather my hands be used to make something beautiful than simply look beautiful. I have always been comfortable wearing my work.

Organic Forms

I went to the Polasek Museum for a photography exhibit, but the best part was getting lost in the sculpture garden. Massive works were placed to grab your attention against the beautiful view of Lake Osceola.

This picture was my favorite. Rather than fixate solely on the sculpture or the lake, I shifted my view to include a nearby tree. Only the sky, delicately fading from pastel to cerulean, remained as a back drop.

The rounded tree reaches out to fill the negative space between itself and the sculpture. A multitude of ruffled leafs create texture over the smooth sky. The sculpture - existing as one, solid mass - covers the sky with a smooth, crisp shape.

She stands bare and at peace with her nature. The tree is simply an extension of nature itself. Two organic forms existing as individuals but creating perfect harmony.

Unlikely Elegance

During the set up for one of the DRIP shows, a crew member took some water from a prop and dumped it in the parking lot. The water trickled down the sloping pavement in thin, winding rivers. I happened to walk by and I thought it was stunning.

I am amazed at how something as simple as water on concrete can transform into so much more. This picture makes me think of long strands of seaweed twisting in a gentle current or a birds eye view of the vast network of streams that make up the Amazon River.

I stop and marvel at how this empty parking spot has taken me to exotic locations half way around the world.

Beams of Light

I love this shot I was able to capture of my cat. Normally I like to leave the blinds open when I am home, but for some reason on that day I had them at an angle. He curled up on my comforter and placed himself in the best spot to get all the warmth from the sun.

Tech Angel

After each DRIP show there is quite a bit of clean up and resetting for the next performance. While we were all scrambling to put the show back together I was able to capture this shot of Kaleb, one of our crew members.

Kaleb was holding one of the props so we could clean it properly. Silhouetted against the lights of the stage he becomes the picture of serenity. While we rush around him he remains still and calm. Almost angelic, with a wrought iron halo to match.

Gems of Man Made and Celestial Nature

I was walking from Publix back to my Starbucks when I saw this sky. I stood in the middle of the street and fumbled with my grocery bag to get my phone out of my pocket. A little frustration was worth capturing this peaceful December sky.

The cool blue sky is famed by the jagged trees as it shifts into dusty lavender. A crescent of light hangs in the distance. The streetlight warms the oncoming night with it's golden glow. The light and power lines stand as equal partners with the trees. A simple reminder of the balance between nature and city life. Photos like this make me feel like they can coexist in harmony. The sky can be beautiful with both gems of man made and celestial nature.
